One of the myths that has emerged over time is that we are able to separate our personal lives from our professional lives. It is true that for the sake of balance we must know where one begins and the other ends. However, part of being a professional is that your vocational life reflects your deepest personal values. What we do is clearly a reflection of who we are.
Being a professional means that you understand where those boundaries lie and have the ability to separate what is important about your life personally from what is required of you professionally. For a moment I would like your permission to be personal in my professional blog.
Some of you may know that my father passed away in late January of this year. William Gutek was married to Rita Gutek for 62 years who gave birth to four children of which I happen to be the youngest. Over a week ago my mom was admitted to the hospital for a simple procedure and over 12 days later she is still in the ICU unit struggling for every breath. Needless to say, what has been happening in my personal life has flowed over into my professional life. So I thought I would take a moment to share all the things that I’ve been grateful for in this entire process.
I am grateful for having my mom all of these years
I am grateful for their 62 year marriage
I am grateful for the professional medical staff that is attentive to her needs
I am grateful for the kindness and generosity of spirit of my clients
I am grateful for the caring concern of my colleagues
I’m grateful for the presence of my brother and sister
I am grateful for the medical researchers and scientists who are doing everything to not only improve longevity and the quality of life
I am grateful for life and the joy of living
I’m grateful for a faith that sustains me and causes me to be an eternal optimist
Finally, allow me to conclude by sharing that I believe gratitude is the antidote to all the stresses that we face in our professional life. To improve the effectiveness of your leadership you must increase your level of gratitude. Take a moment today to go through a litany of all that you really appreciate, enjoy and that give you a source of confidence and excitement.
